The most overlooked aspect  is technical SEO, but pest control owners must recognize this critical component. Without it, your website will suffer. Search engines such as Google, Bing, and Yahoo need access to your pages; if they can’t locate your page, they can’t rank it. Some key elements that make up technical SEO for pest control are.

 

•       Robots.txt disallow

•       Meta tags (no index)

•       Error status codes (non-200 status)

•       Incorrect canonical tags

•       Non-indexable content

•       No links to a page

•       Broken links and 404 pages

•       Website Security

•       Load speed

•       URL structures

•       Duplicate content

 

While this may sound like a foreign language, to put it in a nutshell, technical SEO can make or break your entire SEO strategy. These days for your pest control company to succeed in a cutthroat industry, you can’t afford to miss one aspect or overlook the smallest of details just because it is challenging, time-consuming, or sounds like a foreign language to you.

 

Do you recall as a parent that when your child was learning to talk, it was babbling at first, but their language became easier to understand as they got older? The same is true with speaking Google. The more you practice anything, the better you become, and there really is a pot of gold at the end of the rainbow in terms of visibility, leads, sales, and revenue.

Robot. txt

 

The good news is that you have far more control over search engines than most people assume. Now you can’t manipulate your way to the top of the search engine results in pages (SERPS), but using a robot.txt file allows you to showcase your website to Google bots or spiders the way you want to appear. In addition, a robot.txt tells the bots which pages to crawl and which not. Using this will also help with crawl frequency, impacting your entire SEO strategy. Your SEO.

Let’s say that you are building a website, and as it’s under construction, you aren’t ready for the world to see your pages; that’s when you want to use this robot. Txt to keep them from indexing the page. The only ones that can break such protocols are malware and spyware. We won’t delve into the fact that there is a dark web only to say this is where it resides and why certain people only have access to specific sites.  Most of you will not be creating a file, but you may find a robot.txt on your site that shouldn’t be there. You can have great content, but if you have it blocked or a no-index tag, then Google can’t see it, so you want to check to ensure each page is accessible.

 

Should you need to remove one from your site, the easiest way is to delete the page with a 404 or a 410 status code unless the page has a value from an SEO perspective. An example would be backlinks, and you want to create a 301 redirect. Assuming you are using word press, go to the gear icon, enter the SOURCE URL, and add a target URL, so the page is redirected. Next, set the HTTP code option to 301, permanently moving it from your menu bar. Once you enter all the information, click the “add redirect” button. Meta tags (no index) work similarly for all intense purposes.

HTTP Status Codes

 

I understand this all sounds super confusing to you the first few times you hear it, but codes are very informative; it’s the language your website speaks, so learning a few can help you troubleshoot any errors and ensure you excel at pest control SEO.

 There are 40 + HTTP stats and 100-200 level codes that are milder and tricker than 400-500- level errors. I will only nip the tip of the iceberg by sharing the ones most valuable to you. Generally, the 100-200-level HTTP status codes won’t impact your pest control SEO much. These sore only signals that your website sends that things are working as intended, and Google can send their bots to crawl and rank your website. One way to get your website crawled more frequently is to insert links from a more official website. For example, on my location pages, I include links to Wikipedia for the city page; every city has one. Google is quick to respond when there is a backlink on your website, so when you can’t get Google to index your site quickly, this is how we do it.

The higher codes from 400- to 500- can impact your search engine optimization as it prevents the bots from crawling and indexing your site. When a website has too many errors, this is a sign that your site is not quality, and your ranking will be lower, which is why I mentioned that technical SEO is essential to your pest control efforts.

Technical SEO Tools For Pest Control

The structure and substance of the content are vital to making it rank well in Google searches.

 

Topically relevant: A web page or blog post needs to be appropriate for its audience (that is, it should matter to them). If someone comes to your site looking for a solution to their pest problem, then giving them information about another topic disappoints the reader and Google. Instead, you want to give your visitor the information they need to know so they can make an educated decision about whom they choose to hire.

 

Target keyword placement: The target keyword phrase the page is meant to rank for needs to be placed in the title, the headings, the body, the anchor text of internal and inbound links, and the image alt tags of the page. This SEO tactic for pest control companies will allow your content to be easily found.

 

Authoritative resource: The content should be an authoritative resource that provides value to the reader and answers their intent.

Supporting sources: The content should link to other essential resources (e.g., authoritative articles and supporting documents) that visitors may find helpful.

 

Usability: Long-form content should be formatted in a way that makes it easy to consume (i.e., bulleted lists, headings, and images that break up content, navigation, etc.)

How To Monitor Technical Errors

The best way to monitor how Google previews your website is by using tools; you can go onto your Google My Business dashboard and view your status code under the coverage tab. Another tool to deal with technical troubles is Ahrefs; this will let you know what errors exist so that you can correct them immediately. Listen, we get it. Some people don’t want to invest in tools, but a builder needs a hammer, and in building yourself an online business, there’s just no other way around it. Here is what you want to look for:

 

•       Pages that have errors

•       Valid pages with warnings

•       Resources

•       Content that may be excluded from the index.

 

 You want to see 200 status codes; it’s a good sign that your website is in good shape. If you see 300 status, there are redirects where one page has moved to another. What you do not want to see is 400 codes.

 

400: Bad request. This is a sign that the server cant returns a repose due to technical errors.

 

401: Unauthorized This means the target was denied access

 

402: If you are collecting payment on your site, then this means you owe someone money

 

 403: If this code appears, you are trying to log into a password-protected area

 

 404The most common error that appears is a 404, meaning this page doesn’t exist.

 

 Website security we covered in the last chapter, but to reiterate, you want an SSL certificate and to make sure that in the URL bar is a small lock meaning your website is safe from hackers; this can significantly impact your pest control SEO ranking. However, it’s much more than this. For example, in 2017, the Google Chrome browser

flagged every unsecured website, moving who could even get onto your site. However, a survey by  Search Engine Watch states 82% of people are now fleeing unsafe areas with HTTPS.

 

Again, there is so much depth and breadth to pest control SEO that one book couldn’t contain it, and even if it could, the chance is you wouldn’t read it any more than the service manual that comes with your fleet trucks.  It’s not necessary for you to learn all the ins and outs, but I did my best to give you what matters most: a basic understanding that you can begin using immediately.
