What is Keyword Research?

Pest control keyword research identifies those words or terms that searchers looking for your services enter into the Google search bar. What people are searching for and what you think they are searching for may be different.

For pest control techs, keyword research works side-by-side with your efforts to provide awareness for your brand and give prospective clients an easy outlet to get in touch with you. Queries related to a particular bug problem (such as “how to get rid of ants”) or their specific purchase intent (“hire a pest control company”) are common and valuable words but deliver a different number of visitors.

You can write the best content in the world, but if you aren’t targeting keywords properly (i.e., those with search volume), no one will see it…and that means no one will visit your website to schedule their service to get rid of pests with you.

Why Keywords Matter

As mentioned above, in keyword research (when done correctly), the words you write will tell the search engine what the page is about. Investing in content writing can provide long-term benefits for your business, both as a means of building awareness and conversion…but again, that content won’t stand if you do not do the proper keyword research to serve as its foundation.

How SEO Helps Pest Control

SEO for pest control will help you to stay competitive online for people looking for your services. Using relevant and strategically researched keywords across your website can help you rank higher in search engine results pages (SERP) for search queries. As an example, the word "pest control SEO or "SEO for pest control” is likely the words you Googled to find our website. We practice what we preach. The same holds true for your site. Search engine optimization will help your website get more traffic and, as a result, more leads and sales.

Pest Control Keyword List Online

If you search on Google for pest control keywords, chances are you’ll find a list, but if you use them, you won’t get results; here’s why. That list was designed because business owners like you type the word “pest control keywords” into the search engine, and the SEO agency is doing search engine optimization so that you come to visit their website, that list will do nothing for you! Using words like:

  • Exterminator

  • Wildlife

  • Bed Bugs

  • Mouse Traps

These terms aren’t bad for your website, but Google doesn’t know where you want traffic from, and you don’t know the search volume of those words. It’s better to do your own research using tools or contact us for a customized list.

Manual competitor analysis: You’ve heard the saying, “model the masters.” In this case, one of the best starting points is to create a mind map based on the top-ranking sites in your market. See what practice area pages and blogs they’re creating, then model them. This will give you a good pool of keywords to start with; then, you can analyze those keywords in the future to see if they have a search volume opportunity.

PCT: Pest Control Technology includes a wealth of information for companies to utilize on its website. If you look for trends in consumer questions, they address with their readers; you can start to build a bank of keywords that you know prospective customers are actually using.

“People Also Ask”/” Searches Related To”: Once you’ve identified a great list of keywords (through mind-mapping, manual competitor analysis, etc.), you can analyze these terms using Google Search. Drag them into Search one at a time, then scroll down to find related terms and queries. This way, you can expand your list of pest control keywords with ancillary terms and phrases.

Google Trends: This is a free tool that you can use to identify what is timely and current in terms of consumer interests. It shows you if a specific keyword is trending upwards or downwards and if it’s grown in demand over time.

Keyword Planner: While not as fully featured as some of the other tools on this list, it is always worth considering that Google has more raw data in its hands than anyone else. Their Keyword Planner is a perfectly reasonable place to start, as you’ll be looking at a very broad subsection of the internet through their analytics.

Answer the Public: This site dives deeper into the zeitgeist through the use of interrogatives (who, what, when, where, why) and prepositions (for, of, with, etc.). The results that it generates by the keyword phrase are also visually exciting and can help prime the pump for weeks of content generation.

Doing Keyword Research Using Tools

The Key To Pest Control Research

Keyword Intent

One last factor to consider when doing keyword research is intent. While many queries may have search volume, they don’t necessarily translate to signed cases. For example, the first result in “Questions” for “pest control company” is a prime example of a query with volume but very little value to you if you’re local because you only want customers in your service area.

What form of intent should you target?

Generally, you’ll want to do keyword research for practice area pages, which function at the bottom of the funnel for conversion/sales. These showcase your expertise and include calls to action. Examples of conversion keywords include:

  • Houston pest control company

  • Pest Control Houston

  • Rat Extermination Houston

  • Rat Removal Houston

  • Roach Control Houston

  • Extermination Houston

  • Termites Houston

  • Bed Bug Extermination Houston

  • Etc.

The pest control industry is hypercompetitive. If you run a company and want to generate new clients as part of your marketing strategy, much of your success hinges on whether or not your website can be found in Google search.

The second type of article that you should create falls into the middle to the top of the funnel. These answer questions about pest control and provide awareness for prospective customers. Examples of awareness keywords include:

  •  What pest control company in Houston, TX, treats bed bugs

  • What qualifies as reasonable pest control in Houston, Texas?

  • Where to buy pest control products rodents

Pest Control Keyword Research Step-by-Step

Step 1: Mind-map a keyword pool.

Step 2: Use a keyword research tool *cough Ahrefs cough* to evaluate the opportunities.

Step 3: Write content 10x better than the top results.

Step 4: Profit.
